February 2005 Seminar - Canterbury Branch

Preparing leaders and managers for health reform:
the NHS Experience

Presentation files:  PPT(400kb)     PDF(1.7mb)      HTML

Presented by

John Clark, Director of Graduate Schemes,
Gateway to Leadership Programme and International Relations

John Clark is a Director of the National Health Service Leadership Centre, part of the Modernisation Agency, within the Department of Health, England. He is responsible for developing leadership capacity and capability within the NHS with a particular focus on graduate-entry "fast track" management training schemes and international leadership development programmes for Chief Executives and Medical Leaders.

The first meeting for 2005 was held on Thursday 3rd February. The event was
attended by 20 people who once again were well fed and watered courtesy of
Eurest NZ Ltd in the form of Ludovic Mahu.

John Clark presented on "Preparing leaders and managers for health
reform: the NHS Experience." John is the Director of Graduate Schemes,
Gateway to Leadership Programme and International Relations for the NHS
Leadership Centre, Modernisation Agency of the Department of Health
(England). Despite that awesome epithet he showed himself to be an
extremely knowledgeable and able speaker.

John began by putting the modernisation of the NHS within a wider context
and made comparisons between the old NHS and the new - a move towards
flexible professionals, longer term planning, multiple providers and patient
and referrer choice.

The focus of the UK Government is on system change and they acknowledge that
such change can only come about and be sustained by increased leadership
capability. The Leadership Centre's vision is " the continuous improvement
of health and healthcare through developing leadership capacity and
capability."

The power point presentation is attached for your interest.

John is responsible for international relations and as well as bringing
people out from the UK he is happy to assist visitors to the UK in making
the appropriate connections with managers clinicians there. His email
address is

Overall a very interesting and well presented seminar and a great start to
the year.
